Welcome to Clinton Township of Lenawee County

Clinton Township of Lenawee County, like all townships in Michigan was organized under the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Clinton Township surrounds one of the earliest roadways in Michigan, originally called the Great Saulk Trail. In 1825, Congress appropriated $3000, to have the road surveyed and $20,000 for construction. This road, today known as US 12, became the major turnpike between Detroit and Chicago. The journey from Detroit to Chicago took eight days by stagecoach.

Clinton Township is actually a half township. All townships under the Act of 1787 were established to be 6 miles by 6 miles; however, at some point Clinton broke away from Tecumseh Township and formed its own township. Today it is one of only a handful of townships that is less than full size.

Clinton Township has over 3500 residents and 1800 parcels of land. Coming from Detroit it is sometimes known as the Gateway to the Irish Hills. It is a community rich in early Michigan history.
